چکیده

Abstract We have used the Arecibo Telescope and Green Bank (GBT) to carry out a deep search for H i 21 cm emission from large sample of “Green Pea” galaxies, yielding 19 detections, upper limits on mass. obtain masses M ≈ (4–300) × 10 8 ⊙ with median mass 2.6 9 ; non-detections, 3 σ limit is 5.5 . Properties of Atomic Gas in Spiral Galaxies

Physical properties of the atomic gas in spiral galaxies are brie y considered. Although both Warm (WNM, 10 K) and Cool (CNM, 100 K) atomic phases coexist in many environments, the dominant mass contribution within a galaxy's star-forming disk (R25) is that of the CNM. Mass fractions of 60 to 90% are found within R25. The CNM is concentrated within moderately opaque laments with a face-on surfa...

Gas in Galaxies Atomic and Molecular Clouds

The interstellar medium (ISM) can be thought of as the galactic atmosphere which fills the space between stars. When clouds within the ISM collapse, stars are born. When the stars die, they return their matter to the surrounding gas. Therefore the ISM plays a vital role in galactic evolution. The medium includes starlight, gas, dust, planets , comets, asteroids, fast moving charged particles (c...

Gas Mass Fractions and the Evolution of LSB Dwarf Galaxies

The optical and H I properties for a sample of low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxies, cataloged from the Second Palomar Sky Survey, is presented. Gas mass fractions for LSB dwarfs reach the highest levels of any know galaxy type (fg =95%) confirming that their low stellar densities are due to inefficient conversion of gas mass into stellar mass. Comparison with star formation models indic...

Galaxy Zoo and ALFALFA: Atomic Gas and the Regulation of Star Formation in Barred Disc Galaxies

We study the observed correlation between atomic gas content and the likelihood of hosting a large-scale bar in a sample of 2090 disc galaxies. Such a test has never been done before on this scale. We use data on morphologies from the Galaxy Zoo project and information on the galaxies’ H I content from the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) blind H I survey. Our main result...

Atomic Carbon in Galaxies

We present new measurements of the ground state fine-structure line of atomic carbon at 492 GHz in a variety of nearby external galaxies, ranging from spiral to irregular, interacting and merging types. In comparison with CO(1-0) emission observed at the same spatial resolution, the CI(1-0) line intensity stays fairly comparable in the different environments, with an average value of the ratio ...
